The Office of Research and Innovative Medicine is seeking Project Manager, Research Support who will be responsible under the direction of the Assistant Vice President for Research Support Operations, act as the point person for requests for assistance to navigate through the research organization on behalf of UMMSOM Investigators. Transfer specific experiences into global conditions, and work with teams and individuals to improve the processes supporting the research enterprise. Responsible for field calls and emails from investigators who need assistance in completing a research-related activity, Responses may include guiding the researcher to their next step; explaining the reason for a prior response; investigating why an issue arose; untangling unrelated issues; communicating with other research support offices and staff; instructing departmental personnel on an issue; checking existing internal UM policies and procedures; investigating sponsor policies; facilitating an exception or waiver if appropriate. Maintain a database of root causes of issues. Create interdisciplinary teams to study major impediments to the smooth flow of research from proposal through closeout of an award. Facilitate the work of the teams as they diagram workflow, create process step documents, perform gap analysis, recommend changes, finalize solutions, pilot changes if appropriate, test scalability, present to leadership. Facilitate the implementation of solutions within the organization. Write documentation, provide training if appropriate, draft policies, procedures and guidelines, monitor acceptance, and complete handoff from team to organizational owner.

Bachelorís degree required. Three years work-related experience in academic research administration required. Proven project management skills, team leadership abilities including meeting management, presentation skills, and motivational skills required. Knowledge of grant charts, workflow diagrams, gap analysis and other project management tools required. Expert level competence with Microsoft Office suite including Visio, user level competence in Access and Microsoft Projects. Concise writing style and ability to clearly document findings, progress and solutions required. Knowledge of university research administration processes, procedures and guidelines helpful. Excellent skills in English (both verbal and written) required. Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications will be considered.
