The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Neuro muscular Division currently has an opportunity available for a Nurse Specialist, Research. The Research Nurse Specialist manages and assumes responsibility for clinical research activities within the Neuromuscular Division and Department of Neurology.

This position requires work in a multi-disciplinary neurology research team, and assists the principal investigator and senior research staff in coordinating Federal, industry, and foundation sponsored research studies in neurology. Furthermore, the research nurse specialist plays an additional role in these processes, assuming responsibility for research tasks that specifically require nursing expertise.
Assist the principal investigator (PI) in all aspects of the development and implementation of clinical research and trial protocols. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to: Develop, review and submit required documentation to the UM/JMH IRB to obtain and maintain approval of research protocols. Ensure regular reporting and other IRB requirements. Liaise with study sponsors and other regulatory agencies (e.g. funding agencies, FDA, etc.) Provide potential study participants with information about clinical research trials and other opportunities. Obtain informed consent from study/trial participants. Maintenance of meticulous records. Adherence to any reporting and other requirements by the IRB. Interaction with funding agencies, pharmaceutical companies and research collaborators. Travel to national meetings to represent the study, reporting back to the PI. Coordinate patient recruitment and screening procedures. Obtain necessary medical records. Screen potential study participants. Schedule patients for study visits. Acquire necessary technical skills and perform study related procedures. Coordinate research related activities between departments to accomplish goals of studies. Develop and manage the following procedures as they pertain to research studies and patients: Complete patient data forms; collect results from outside laboratories, etc. complete data into case report forms, and maintain research documents according to GCP guidelines. Maintain pool of study candidates and ensure their availability. Contact patients by telephone as required by the PI for clinical follow-up for requirements and adherence to research protocols. Collect lab specimens. Prepare lab samples for shipping to be sent for analysis. Enter data in case report form binders and electronic capture website as needed. Obtain and update family pedigrees and enter data into Progeny. Coordinate subject's travel to UM.  Perform FVC and NIF testing. Conduct epidemiological survey questionnaire
Coordinate the necessary testing for patient evaluations per physician's orders and study protocol requirements. Process and ship lab specimens to central lab as required by protocol and maintain updated study kits and supplies and maintain general laboratory supplies. Offer assistance and provide information to help patients with protocol procedures. Assist in keeping accurate records of concomitant medications and study medications as per study protocol requirements. Maintain patients chart with clinic notes; up to date reports of laboratory results and change in treatment. Maintain database to keep records up to date. This position requires filing, data-entry, making photocopies, faxing and other general clerical duties as assigned; updating enrollment/screening logs; and medical records request. Perform other duties as assigned by PI within established policy. Assist the PI with financial records including developing budgets, monthly reconciliation, subject reimbursements, necessary financial reporting, etc. Maintain biorepository records. Interact with the sponsoring agencies to coordinate the proper and timely execution of clinical research projects including providing documentation that demonstrates the capabilities of the research division. Provides subjects and their families with education about familial ALS and other neuromuscular disorders. ALS Community Outreach:
Interact with local and national ALSA and MDA representatives. Interact with familial ALS support groups to provide information and education about familial ALS. Help to maintain program website to keep up to date and accurate information available to the public. Interact with community physicians to inform them of options for families with familial ALS. Coordinate activities of the ALS Research Collaboration. 

Minimum requirements for this position include:Bachelors degree in Nursing and valid Florida Registered Nurse License is required. One year of patient experience as a Registered Nurse. Two additional years of experience specific to the area of specialty when applicable. Any appropriate combination of relevant education and/or work experience will be considered.
