The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Associate position in ocean data assimilation. This position is located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida, and involves collaboration with scientists at AOML and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

The successful candidate will join a team that conducts research toward improving the accuracy of ocean analyses and forecasts for a broad range of applications. Initial emphasis will target improvement of ocean analyses used to initialize the ocean component of coupled hurricane prediction models with the goal of improving intensity forecasts. Progress will be achieved by improving the performance of ocean models and data assimilation methodology used to generate the analyses that provide initial conditions to ocean forecast models. These efforts will quantitative assess impacts of existing and planned ocean observing systems, and objective evaluation and improvement of data assimilation methodologies used in the prediction system. The incumbent will contribute to the ongoing development of a regional to global observing system evaluation capability to improve ocean prediction for a broad range of applications.

Applicants must have a PhD in oceanography, meteorology, or a related field.  The incumbent must be capable of running and analyzing complex ocean modeling and data assimilation systems. He/she is expected to develop the capability to conceive, propose, and conduct collaborative and independent scientific research projects, document results in scientific publications, and present results at national and international meetings. Experience in the development of ocean general circulation models and data assimilation methodologies is highly desired.
