The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applicants for a Senior Research Associate I position. This position is located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida, and involves collaboration with scientists at AOML and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

The successful candidate will provide computer programming support for a project to study the design of ocean observing systems for the purpose of improving ocean forecasts for applications such as hurricane and oil spill prediction. The work involves running and analyzing experiments using a large ocean circulation modeling system. The incumbent will assist scientists in the processing, analysis, plotting, management, and distribution of oceanographic data, both actual measurements and data generated by the modeling system. The incumbent will assist scientists in statistically analyzing the results of model experiments and helping with the production of project reports and publications. He/she will perform programming tasks assigned by the lead investigator.

Must have a M.S. in computer science, oceanography, meteorology, mathematics, statistics, or a related field. The position requires programming skill with one or more high-level programming languages (FORTRAN, C++, Matlab), and one or more high-level computer scripting environments (LINUX, Perl, Python), along with the ability to manage and analyze large observational and model-generated datasets.
