The Digital Media Lab (DML) is part of University of Miami Libraries’ Learning and Research Services. DML staff provide expert support and consultation in the use of digital audio, video, and graphic design technology, as well as web development and image creation techniques. Reporting to the e-Learning and Emerging Technologies Librarian and Digital Media Lab Manager, the Digital Media Lab Technician is responsible for assisting with the provision of services to support learning and creativity in the Digital Media Lab (DML) located at the heart of the University of Miami Libraries’ Learning Commons.  The DML Technician supervises student employees and provides service and assistance to patrons working with multimedia software, hardware, and other digital tools and technologies. Areas of focus may include photography, videography, graphic design, and printing. Notably, DML is a key service hub for patrons using Adobe Creative Cloud.

 

Reporting to the Music Librarian, the Digital Media Lab Technician working in the DML Music Library branch is responsible for assisting with the provision of services to support learning and creativity of patrons.  The DML Technician supervises student employees and provides service and assistance to patrons working with multimedia software, hardware, and other digital tools and technologies. Areas of focus may include music, audio editing, sound mixing, sound engineering, and videography.

 

This is a full-time position, flexible hours is required.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Digital Media Lab (75%)

  • Responsible for maintaining and promoting the Digital Media Lab in the Learning Commons at two locations: the Richter Library and its new extension in the Music Library.
  • Provide introductions and tours at both locations, as needed.
  • Assist lab patrons with the use of the multimedia hardware and software with a focus on audio, sound, and music.
  • Maintain daily operation of audiovisual electronics (for new and old formats), printers and accessories at Richter and Music Libraries. These duties entail troubleshooting and requesting repairs and replacements.
  • Record accurate statistics of Digital Media Lab usage and service requests.
  • Use Library circulation system to check-in/check-out lending equipment.
  • Handle fees, late charges and billing for the Digital Media Lab.
  • Update Digital Media Lab website.
  • Process digitization requests for patrons and provide high-quality digital files to patrons.
  • Provide orientation, training, and evaluation for student workers.
  • Assist student workers in developing their skill sets and gaining more proficiency in lab software and hardware.
  • Assist in developing print and web-based instructional materials for students, faculty, and staff in areas of digital media.
  • Keep up to date on changes and upgrades in the software and equipment.
  • Explore emerging technologies in sound and audio recording, mixing, and engineering.
  • Troubleshoot computer issues.
  • Provide back-up support and consultation for digital media lab units in branch libraries.

 

Music Library Front Desk Customer Service (10%)

  • Check-in and check-out library materials using library software
  • Assist patrons in locating materials in the online catalog
  • Collect and process fines and fees
  • Provide customer service over the telephone
  • Enforce library entrance and ID policies
  • Direct patrons to the appropriate locations/departments within the library
  • Answer general questions regarding Music Library and the UM campus
  • Accept lost and found items and store according to library policy
  • Place items on hold for patrons and retrieve held items for check-out
  • Search for course reserves

 

Provide secondary support for Library Services (10%) 

  • Provide back-up support to Creative Services and library educational services with photography, videography, and sound mixing.
  • Manipulate images/video/sound and correct color as required using provided software and upload digital images to specified servers.
  • Follow established data entry standards set up by the UM Libraries to provide a description of the objects for the archives.

 

Communications, Relationships, and Service (Applicable towards all duties)

 

  • Maintain helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library customers.
  • Provide excellent referrals to other services in the Learning Commons
  • Establish effective interdepartmental relationships within and beyond the UM Libraries to increase unit effectiveness and disseminate information.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively with Music and Digital Lab staff and other departmental staff or administration in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Technical school, certification or some college (or working on degree)      
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience with Mac OS X operating system
  • Three years of experience with at least one of the following (can be cumulative): sound recording, audio mixing, videography, digitizing of analog material
  • Must be able to provide effective application instruction to a group or on a one-on-one basis.
  • Experience using the following software application suites:
    • Adobe Creative Cloud
    • iLife
    • Microsoft Office (Mac and Windows)

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree     
  • Experience using the following software application suites: Audition, Audacity, Garage Band, Pro Tools, Word Press
