At the U, we are committed to attracting a talented workforce to support our common purpose of transforming lives through teaching, research, and service. We are one of the largest private employers in Miami-Dade County; home to more than 13,400 faculty and staff from all over the world.

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in Physical Oceanography. The position will involve using satellite and in situ observations, together with statistical techniques and simple physical models, to create gridded maps of upper-ocean temperature and salinity stratification for the global tropics. The resultant data set will be used to assess the role of upper-ocean stratification in tropical cyclone intensification and intraseasonal to interannual variations of sea surface temperature. The research will involve close collaboration with scientists at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

The incumbent will be responsible for processing and analyzing data, presenting findings at scientific meetings, and publishing results in scientific journals.

Requirements:
• Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Climate Science, or a related field.

Desirable qualifications include:
• Knowledge of basic statistical techniques and their applications for analyzing upper-ocean data (familiarity with machine learning techniques, such as neural networks or support vector machines, is a plus).
• Experience with analysis of tropical cyclone track data and gridded data sets to understand the relationships between tropical cyclone intensification and environmental parameters.
• Experience running numerical ocean and/or coupled ocean-atmosphere models to investigate the ocean's role in tropical cyclone intensification.
