Responsible for the development of the professional and student staff and daily operational logistics of the Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program at the University of Miami. Reports to the Director of Residential Life. Directly supervises the Residential Life Safety & Security Manager, the two Residential Life Night Managers, and the Office Supervisor. Indirectly supervises student staff, including the Security Coordinator staff, the Security Supervisor staff, the Security Assistant staff, and the Office Assistant staff. Manages policies, procedures, programs, and staff to protect residents, guests, staff members, and assets of the Department of Housing and Residential Life. The goals are accomplished through the successful execution of overnight residential area operations and programming. These include, but are not limited to: community access control, coordinating resident lockout services, emergency management and response, fire and crisis safety, along with security and crime prevention education initiatives. Coordinates and facilitates the recruitment, selection, training, and retention of the professional and student staff under this position’s purview.

Duties and responsibilities:
The University of Miami is home to over 15,400 undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and from 140 nations around the world. The Department of Housing and Residential Life is home to an extensive and diverse residential program featuring six residential communities that range in size from 400 – 900 students with over 4,400 students living on-campus. The Safety and Security program is charged with staffing all exterior access points to residential colleges and the University Village main office between the hours of 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM, 365 days a year. This includes 11 posts that are staffed by up to 17 Security Assistants and supervised by 3 Security Supervisors each night. We strive to fulfill our vision – Student Housing for Student Success. The Assistant Director of Residential Life Safety and Security is charged with leading the Safety and Security program with particular focus on long-term and large-scale projects. The Assistant Director of Residential Life Safety and Security is responsible for daily operations and general oversight of the entire Safety and Security program; this is achieved through the successful completion of all duties under the purview of this position. Significant evening and weekend hours are expected. The Assistant Director also serves as an on call crisis responder.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
1.Directs and supervises the Department of Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program comprised of approximately (4) professional staff members: (1) Residential Life Safety & Security Manager, (2) Residential Life Night Managers, and (1) Office Supervisor; indirectly supervises approximately (80) student staff members: (2) Security Coordinators, (13) Security Supervisors, (60) Security Assistants, and (5) Office Assistants.
2.Responsible for work performance review and evaluation of professional staff overseen and of senior-level and mid-level student Security Coordinator and Security Supervisor staff as well as appeals and/or higher level discipline cases of student staff.
3.Coordinates and is responsible for fall and spring semester recruitment and selection of student Security Coordinator, Security Supervisor, Security Assistant, and Office Assistant staff for the Department of Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program and is also responsible for summer intersession (summer school, conference housing, summer athletics, etc.) and winter intersession (winter school, athletics, etc.) recruitment and selection.
4.Participates in the recruitment processes for all levels of professional staff within the Department Housing and Residential Life.
5.Coordinates and facilitates fall and spring semester comprehensive training sessions for student Security Coordinator, Security Supervisor, Security Assistant, and Office Assistant staff; this also includes different operational logistics for each summer and winter intersession.
6.Coordinates and facilitates fall and spring semester safety and security training and education sessions for Area Director, Office Supervisor, Resident Assistant, and Desk Assistant staff; this also includes different operational logistics for each summer and winter intersession.
7.Charged with reviewing and assessing the effectiveness of the HRL Safety & Security program through establishing outcomes, implementing outcomes-based initiatives and programs for residents, and assessing those initiatives.
8.Responsible for the implementation and retention of the four core values germane to the HRL Safety and Security program including: mastery of policy, professional conduct, customer satisfaction, and emergency management.
9.Coordinates and facilitates Safety and Security staff team development initiatives.
10.Facilitates and ensures positive staff morale, open communication, and exceptional performance with external stakeholders throughout the Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program.
11.Prepares and revises professional and student staff policies and procedures, manuals, and safety and security publications as needed and ensures updates are made to all manuals annually.
12.Prepares and revises all forms and resources utilized by HRL Safety & Security staff.
13.Possesses comprehensive knowledge of Departmental and University systems such as StarRez and Onity. Prepares resources and trainings for staff to utilize systems appropriately.
14.Prepares annual crime statistics for UMPD along with annual reports pertaining to nightly critical incidents such as fire alarms, intoxicated students, hospitalizations, etc. faced within Housing and Residential Life buildings.
15.Manages annual budgets in excess of $900,000 for Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program operations and student staff payroll. Ensures compliance with University and Departmental procurement procedures.
16.Serves on an on-call Housing and Residential Life professional staff member for management of evening, overnight, and weekend emergencies and crisis response related to safety and security.
17.Available for significant evening and weekend work pertinent to the position (hiring interviews, staff selections, team builder events, staff meetings, etc.). Responsible for working hours that promotes interactions with HRL Safety & Security staff.
18.Responsible for the leadership, innovation, governance, and management necessary to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program regulatory, operational, and strategic risk management activities such as University liability and ensures alignment with organizational objectives such as residential community awareness.
19.Hears student conduct cases and assesses sanctions based on severity of University and/or Housing and Residential Life policies and procedures violations as assigned by the Dean of Students Office.
20.Assists with administrative room searches as requested by Residential Life staff.
21.Responsible for coordinating and implementing semi-annual required fire drills with Coral Gables Fire Rescue, UMPD, and Facilities in all residential colleges and the University Village.
22.Acts as Departmental liaison with the University of Miami Police Department on matters pertaining to crime and crime prevention initiatives.
23.Develops and creates co-curricular educational programming initiatives pertaining to safety and security as well as crime prevention with Housing and Residential Life, UMPD Crime Prevention, the Office of Emergency Management, and other external departments.
24.Coordinates and facilitates the 24-hour staffing of Housing and Residential Life front desk and buildings and related security operations during periods when the University is closed and/or threatened by natural or manmade disasters; this includes but is not limited to: hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, etc.; assists in off-campus hurricane shelter operations and coordinates and facilitates emergency planning and management operations for Housing and Residential Life with the Office of Emergency Management.
25.Monitors and evaluates current Housing and Residential Life building operational activities related to safety and security, identifies security requirements, establishes performance standards, and develops specifications for: residential building access control, door prop alarm systems, administrative video monitoring, fire and life safety systems, and other emergency situations.
26.Constantly evaluates the future needs of the Housing and Residential Life Safety and Security program, modifies policies to ensure responsible utilization of resources, assists in strategic planning initiatives, and suggests implementations for new directives aimed at achieving both short and long term goals.
27.Participates on University-wide committees as requested and completes assessment projects as needed.
28.Completes other duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of Residential Life.

Requirements:
•Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field is required.
•Minimum of three years of full-time professional work experience is required; progressive work experience in a medium-to-large scale residential college setting is preferred.
•Experience with student staff supervision, emergency management, and crisis response is required.
•Experience with student conduct, educational programming, working with a diverse student population, conflict management and resolution, and simultaneously managing responsibilities in varied capacities is preferred.
•Experience and familiarity with working overnight hours, access control systems (CSGold, CBORD, Onity), and surveillance software (OnSSI Ocularis Client) is beneficial to the position and preferred, but can be taught on the job and is not required.
