The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, FL, invites applicants for an Assistant Scientist position to conduct research to improve hurricane intensity forecasts produced by coupled prediction systems through improvements in atmosphere-wave-ocean coupling. This position is situated at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and will involve collaboration with scientists at AOML and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS).
 
The successful candidate will conduct research on the use of ocean and air-sea flux observations to improve ocean coupling in hurricane prediction models with the overarching goal of improving intensity prediction. This work will involve two approaches. First, ocean observing systems and technologies will be evaluated with respect to improving the accuracy of ocean model initialization through data assimilation, and also with respect to the resulting impact on intensity forecast errors. This evaluation will focus on designing improved sampling strategies for existing ocean observing systems, and also on evaluating the impacts of new ocean observing platforms such as profiling underwater gliders and profiling floats. Second, ocean and air-sea flux observations will be used to evaluate and improve model representation of physical processes that govern atmosphere-wave-ocean coupling. This research will emphasize improving parameterizations of air-sea fluxes and of mixed layer dynamics in the ocean model. The incumbent will propose and conduct research projects in collaboration with scientists at AOML and RSMAS to further these goals, address specific scientific questions related to coupling, present results at national and international meetings, and publish results in scientific journals.
 
Qualifications:
•Applicants must have a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Physical Oceanography, or a related field and postdoctoral experience in oceanic or atmospheric modeling, with coupled modeling experience preferred.
•Strong programming skills are required to run and analyze output from complex modeling systems. 
•Strong communication skills are required.
