The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) invites applications for an Assistant Scientist position in ocean modeling and prediction. This position is situated at the NOAA, Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and will involve collaboration with scientists at AOML and RSMAS.
The successful candidate will be part of a team that conducts research toward improving ocean analyses and forecasts for a broad range of applications such as coupled hurricane forecasting, oil-spill and marine debris prediction, and ocean climate monitoring and prediction. This research focuses on improving the performance of ocean models and data assimilation methodology. It also involves objective evaluation of existing and planned ocean observing systems based on their impact toward improving data-assimilative ocean state estimates and the accuracy of forecasts initialized by these state estimates. The incumbent will propose and conduct research projects in collaboration with ocean modelers and observationalists at AOML and RSMAS to further these goals, address specific scientific questions related to ocean predictability, present results at national and international meetings, and publish results in the refereed literature.
Applicants must have a PhD in Physical Oceanography or a related field and have at least one year of post-doctoral experience in oceanic or atmospheric modeling. The incumbent will be hired at the Assistant Scientist position with starting salary based on experience and accomplishments, including publication record.
