The individual, reporting to the Preservation Administrator, is responsible for library work of a complex nature requiring independent judgment based on extensive knowledge of library policies and procedures. Incumbent works with books, works on paper, photographs, other media, and non-print formats; Provides supervised conservation treatments for special collections materials for the purpose of archival use and preservation, as well as treatments for general collections; Assists Preservation Administrator and Library Technician with special preservation projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
In consultation with the Preservation Administrator or Library Technician performs treatment on special collections materials, including paper, photographs, and bindings in accordance with historical styles and conservation standards; may include mending, board slotting, stain reduction, de-acidification, washing, dry cleaning, consolidation, or tape removal. Uses independent judgment, based on conservation standards, to repair general collections material; may include mending, tip-ins, hinge tightening, re-backing, re-casing, pockets, or re-housing. Constructs protective enclosures, including clamshell boxes, portfolios, pamphlet binders, and polyester encapsulations for materials that cannot be otherwise treated; Measures fragile materials for boxes to be made by outside vendors. Participates in exhibition preparation; may include fabricating custom supports, matting and framing, or assisting with the installation of materials; adheres to the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) code of ethics when performing conservation treatments.
Assists in the shelf preparation of new acquisitions as needed, including preparation and review of call number labels, stamping, security stripping; assists in disaster planning and recovery activities; assists with environmental monitoring activities; assists with integrated pest management activities; participates in assigned special projects for the Preservation & Conservation Program; other duties as assigned.
Maintain helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library customers, internal and external; establish effective and supportive interdepartmental relationships, and participate in cross training opportunities to increase library and unit effectiveness and to effectively disseminate information. Communicate frequently and effectively with all University staff, faculty and administrators in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information. When possible, participate in committees and teams within and outside the libraries to provide services to the Libraries, University, and the Community.
High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 2 years related experience in a library or cultural institution; knowledge and experience with bookbinding, preservation, and conservation techniques; analytic and critical thinking skills; excellent manual dexterity; ability to work cooperatively and productively with others; ability to work independently in a team environment; effective oral and written English language communication skills; excellent organizational skills.
