Work Location: Coral Gables Campus

Full-time position generally working Sunday – Thursday from 6:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. - Some flexible hours is required.

Under the direction of the Head of Education and Outreach, the Library Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive assistance in the use of electronic and print research information resources and for providing first level computing support to Otto G. Richter Library patrons. This position involves answering computing, information and reference questions received in person, by telephone, via email, or virtual reference, and assisting with day-to-day operations of the department.

Conduct reference interviews to determine patrons’ informational needs; provide advanced assistance with patron queries requiring extensive knowledge of general library services, collections, policies, and systems; provide research assistance for the library’s online catalog and electronic resources; answer directional and informational questions; provide virtual reference services via email, chat, and/or instant messaging; troubleshoot problem records in the catalog and databases; make referrals to subject librarians for more specialized research assistance; provide referrals to and basic assistance with Digital Media Lab services as needed; provide support for library Information Commons (IC) users by: a) Serving as first level of support for computer questions and network printing issues; b) Maintaining strong knowledge of the IC specialty software and network printing and sharing knowledge with library patrons; c) Report networking issues d) Providing support for networked printing by maintaining paper and toner supply and fixing basic printer problems.
Maintain the Reference print collection, including processing new print materials, transferring superseded editions to other locations, updating catalog records, etc.; participate in department projects and activities; compile and present both routine and custom statistics as well as reports and memos; update public web pages for which the department is responsible; conduct library orientation sessions and tours; maintain inventory of and orders for office supplies for the department; maintain instruction room calendar and schedule class sessions; answer the telephone and direct incoming calls.

Maintain positive and supportive customer service behavior with all library customers; establish effective and supportive interdepartmental relationships to increase unit effectiveness and disseminate information; communicate frequently and effectively with all university staff, faculty, and administrators in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information; attend departmental meetings and write reports as required; participate in library committees and task forces as needed.

Reports to Department Head or designee; may supervise student assistants; has direct contact with students, faculty, community members, alumni, and other library visitors as well as direct contact with library staff and library faculty.

Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent, some college preferred, and a minimum of 3 years of college or relevant work experience; excellent customer service skills; excellent communication skills; familiarity with the research library environment and resources; hardware and software knowledge and troubleshooting skills; demonstrated research skills; computer skills and proficiency in Windows operating system and Microsoft Office; strong self-motivation and team player; ability to work in a changing, progressive environment.
